Angel Morey remembers the moment she knew music is transformative.
Born without arms and only one leg, she remembers being distraught upon learning that she would have to leave her kindergarten friends at Windsor Lake Elementary because her parents had bought a house outside the district.
It was Christmas. Her friends decided to sing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” to her as a departing gift. Tears flowed as the four-year-old listened. Then, on impulse, she began singing the same song back to them.
“I was still sad, but singing somehow released me that day,” she said. “That was the first time I knew the healing power of music.”
Angel has been singing ever since. Through terrible disabilities, surgeries and illnesses, including a rare stomach disorder that requires her to go without food for days at times.
Angel, now 32 and living alone in Columbia, sings now for more than personal pleasure. In just a few days, she will fly to New York with a chance to sing for the world. Along with thousands of others, she will audition for the NBC hit show, “America’s Got Talent”—something she has dreamed of.
Her friends created this website to share this extraordinary woman with strangers who will become fans. There are no guarantees that she will make the first cut.
But we do make this promise: Her singing will amaze you. More importantly, her courage and optimism will inspire you.
